What an amazing gift to be able to watch an astronomical event from my back porch. Here is tonight's lunar eclipse as it develops, the shadow of the earth beginning to move across the moon, obscuring it from the sun's light. I love taking a moment to look up and think about the vastness of the universe...a vast universe where shadows are still cast in the same way they are in a tiny scale when you walk outside on a sunny day or make a shadow puppet on the wall.
I'm so used to driving 8, 10, 15 hours for dark skies that it's easy to think of the night sky as something that only exists out in the country. But its beauty is overhead always, blocked by the extreme light pollution of the modern world. You lose the stars but do get a light shining on an highway billboard for your local personal injury lawyer.
