The Milky Way from Joshua Tree National Park, California, USA

The almost infinte stars that form the bands of the milky way galaxy swirl in the night sky over a mountainous horizon

This is about 4am in the middle of the Cholla Cactus Garden in Joshua Tree National Park. Completely silent except for the loud din of life at nighttime in the desert and the occasional plane high overhead. There are better places to be trying to minimize your own visibility -- it's an incredibly dense patch of famously nasy cacti -- but I think the photo is its own reward. I only picked up a few spines harmlessly in the side of my boot.
